DJ MICRO
MUSIC IS HIS WAY OF LIFE...
Interview by Lesley Simon
DJ Micro, a true veteran from the east coast rave scene,
has continually enticed audiences with various music styles
when mixing, including energy-driven trance, progressive
house, and breakbeat. Micro, not only has taken the electronic
scene by storm with his uplifting and dance friendly tracks,
but has received international praise for several remixes
and original work.
I had the opportunity to
sit down with Michael Marsicano, better known to the electronic
scene as DJ Micro before his Ritual performance at the Redzone
Nightclub on August 31st, 2003. Here’s what he had
to say…
MPG: What’s your weekend
been like?
Micro: My weekend started
Friday in Montreal at club Aria. Great, great club. Big,
huge club. Packed. I got into a car on Saturday, drove three
hours to Quebec City and played at a rave with 3000 people.
I got back into the car, drove back to Montreal and came
here (Columbus).
MPG: Are you still touring
for “My Frequency” or is touring a constant
weekly occurrence for you?
Micro: I tour year round
whether or not I have released a CD.
MPG: It’s apparent
that many fans of the electronic genre enjoy your music
and performances. Last April we brought you to The Factory.
Do you remember the crowd that night? I think you played
for an audience of almost 1000.
Micro: I had great time
and the enthusiasm was amazing.
MPG: Micro, you have such
a huge following in the electronic genre. People are taken
over by your performance. What do you think it is that draws
thousands of fans out to see you perform?
Micro: Good question. I
think I obviously play for the crowd. It’s always
a good time. I love what I do or I would not be doing it.
MPG: Where is your favorite
venue and city that you enjoy performing most?
Micro: I like playing in
LA; the State Palace in New Orleans is always a good time;
and Denver. The Church in Denver is great.
MPG: What about your hometown?
Micro: New York…well,
there’s not too much going on right now. But, there
are some big clubs opening. Twilo is re-opening under another
name. Crobar, Avalon, and the Limelight are opening.
MPG: Where do you see yourself
five years from now?
Micro: Older (laughs). It’s
really tough to say. I’m not a fortune teller. Hopefully
doing what I’m doing now.
MPG: How old were you when
you had your first break?
Micro: I was 20 and now
I’m 33.
MPG: And, what was that
like for you?
Micro: It was my first break
playing in a club. I played a mix of mostly everything back
in 1990.
MPG: Where do you see electronic
music, especially the scene five years from now?
Micro: The scene has its
lows and its highs. I think right now it’s on a low,
but dance music just evolves. The highs will be back soon.
MPG: Being a veteran of
the east coast rave scene, what is your take on the Rave
Act?
Micro: I haven’t really
heard it being enforced on anyone. It’s a really tough
situation for club owners and promoters. It must definitely
be a fear factor for all of them.
MPG: Any recent productions?
Micro: I have a new single
coming out called ‘Penetrate.’ I’m also
doing a remake of ‘External Flame’ (by the 80s
group The Bangles) with Dave Aude. Actually I’m doing
a lot of studio work. I also have a new CD coming out in
March.
MPG: You are always pumping
out CDs.
Micro: Well, that’s
in March. It will be a year since ‘My Frequency’
hit store shelves. I usually try and wait 10 months. This
is so fans won’t forget me (laughs). I try and put
something out every 10 months because the fan base gets
antsy.
MPG: What are your plans
for this fall and winter?
Micro: More traveling.
MPG: What are your top five
tracks at the moment?
Micro: Well, my track ‘Penetrate.’
The Joshua Ryan remix of the new DJ Icey record. I’m
really bad with titles. A remix of Madonna’s ‘Die
Another Day.’ It’s a white (label) that no really
has. Armin van Buuren’s ‘Yet Another Day’
and a new Dave Aude remix of Sting.

MICRO
Already a part of American dance music history, Micro was
turned on to house and techno through the efforts of pioneering
techno DJ Frankie Bones, bringing the burgeoning sound back
to Long Island with him, hosting several clubs until forming
the legendary techno night Caffeine with two other partners
in Dix Hills, N.Y. Like NYC's NASA and Baltimore's Fever,
Caffeine served as the backbone to the Long Island rave
scene, defining a movement which encompassed its own distinctive
approach to fashion, dancing, and sound. Serving as one
of the club's resident DJs alongside Onionz, Micro's record
selection served as the basis for many an East Coast kid's
introduction to dance music. When Caffeine folded, Micro
turned his eye to production and to touring the nationwide
rave circuit. He's known for mixing hard and progressive
house, trance, and occasional breaks on the aggressive side
of the New York dance music tradition. With partner Vicious
Vic, Micro founded a techno duo called Progression and scored
a club hit with their "Reach Further." And to
this day, Micro helps to perpetuate the Caffeine legacy,
which nowadays functions as a clothing line and a record
label which Micro A&Rs. In addition to helming the annual
Caffeine club tours, Micro has participated in the Moonshine
Overamerica tours and the Zen Festival in Orlando, Fla.

FREAKY FLOW / FLIPSIDE
This DJ/MC duo has combined the fast and booming beats of
drum and bass with the freestyle MCing and scratching of
hip-hop to create a style of music all their own. Known
for his technical mixing and mad scratching, Freaky Flow
has earned the moniker of "Toronto's Jungle Scratchmaster,"
and is rarely seen without MC Flipside at his side, spitting
out intense rhymes. Their unique style has propelled them
to the top of Moonshine Music's sales chart and led them
to become one of the most sought-after acts today, headlining
at major events throughout Canada, the United States, Japan,
Hong Kong and Europe.
